LOST POKEMON, ROUND II:
H.R. GLIGER

Okay, WOAH. Fans have speculated for years that Gligar was inspired by the Facehuggers from Alien, based entirely on its canonical propensity to attack people's faces before paralyzing them with a sting. The protoype design makes it far clearer, and now I'm inclined to believe its name was quite possibly a pun on "glide" and "Giger" all along, instead of coming from "gargoyle" like many have interpreted.

It's pretty wild to think that, all this time, humble Gligar was inspired by an American movie monster so familiar and so incredibly grisly. I do wish that some of the Facehugger aspect still showed through a little more in the final design, or at least, that the "ribs" of Gligar's wings were still complete insectoid appendages. It's just a great look!
