NIGHTMARE BEINGS 2016: Part V

With Artwork by Cstalli!

Monsters and villains from your creepiest dreams!

MOM'S NECK

Similarities to the mythological Rokurokubi aside, this must be one of the most disturbing dreams submitted this year. Imagining someone you know behaving this unnaturally before doing the physically impossible is worse than any overtly threatening or dangerous monster.

There's a "sequel" to this one, too, but we'll get to it later - another artist illustrated the followup!

THE SOOT MAN

Another interpretation of the sootman, who's fast become one of my favorite dream bogeymen. As a commenter pointed out last time, it's interesting to think about how rarely people actually encounter soot in most of the modern world, once an everyday pollutant from the ubiquitousness of fireplaces.

THE SEA PIG

Monsters in my own dreams tend to go through constant, baffling shifts a lot like this, and are just as often named for some completely different creature.

MR. OOGLE

I'm beginning to think Mr. Oogle might be one of the most "perfect" possible monsters. The description of something human-like stretched over something horse-like is the perfect storm of the uncanny, then you've got the abnormally large, glassy eyes, the horrendously long limb with too many joints and the pathetic, floundering body for a creature both miserably pitiful and clearly very dangerous.

THE SASQUATCH

I say Mr. Oogle and the long-necked mom are disturbing, but Rhetco's "Sasquatch" gives them a good run for their money. The physical description of the thing is bad enough, but its ability to control your movement and force you to put your head in its mouth is downright godawful. The good kind of godawful. The kind you want in a quality 'mare. The continuous, escalating moaning is just the icing on the cake, a euphimism I'm pretty sure I use way too much, but what can I say, I like cake, and I like cake that moans continuously as I put my head in its mouth.
