THE OTHER AGUMON LINE

CHILD: AGUMON

I said on our last page that the main character of the next digimon series just had another Agumon, so here it is, and it only really differs by having those red strap things on its claws.

RATING:

ADULT: GEOGREYMON AT

Agumon with Gloves also evolves into a marginally different Greymon, with a spikier "helmet," more markings, shoulder horns and a somewhat sleeker body. I can only be extremely neutral on this.

RATING:

PERFECT: RIZE GREYMON

I guess Rize Greymon is a pretty strong example of how much Digimon's style has shifted. The original Metalgreymon was a pretty frightening, battle-scarred kaiju, while Rize feels like a more anthropomorphized alternative with shinier, more colorful, more "perfect" cybernetics, and I'm just underwhelmed by that, sorry. The only thing that makes this thing really interesting, and mostly for the humor of it, is the fact that a flying, cyborg dinosaur just has a big gigantic revolver for an arm.

RATING:

ULTIMATE: VICTORYGREYMON

I definitely feel very strongly like I've seen this digimon before. I haven't literally, but it has so much in common with so many other Ultimates by now, it feels kind of interchangeable with a dozen other Greymon and V-mon variants. Even its profile reads like so many others; impenetrable armor, signature fighting technique, exceptionally devastating sword...how many of these guys are there gonna be?! I'm sorry, Victory Greymon, but I was burn out enough on giant lizard knights almost a hundred reviews ago. Not your fault, though, and I kind of think you look a little better than Wargreymon, actually.

RATING:

ALTERNATIVE ULTIMATE: SHINEGREYMON

And, come on, this ain't even got a dinosaur head on it. This is just a guy! I guess that's a bit different, at least, and I like different, but my critique of Victorygreymon still stands.

This digimon also has a "burst mode" and "ruin mode" that supposedly count as separate digimon, but if you can't tell, I am getting...fatigued.

I gotta say, I really do feel bad that so many of my digimon reviews have now gone down this "meh, it's not my thing" route. There are entire archived 4chan threads complaining that I shouldn't even be reviewing digimon if so many are going to turn out that way, or at the very least skip ahead past any that I truly don't care about...but I feel like I made a commitment here. I really want to keep reviewing as many digimon as I can, but I still have to be honest about what I personally like. That's just the way it goes!
